Zainab Balogun, Lala Akindoju & Ufuoma McDermott are giving us self-love vibes today!

Growing up can be awkward. Puberty can be mean sometimes and made a lot of us dislike certain things about our bodies. Thankfully, with maturing, we get to develop a better sense of self and learn to love & appreciate our bodies more.

It is tempting to feel like you’re the only one dealing with body issues. And you would be very wrong. We all go through it and Nigerian TV personality, Zainab Balogun is making that crystal clear.

A short while ago Zainab posted a gorgeous photo of herself that had us wishing we were her skin lol. However, it was her caption that really caught our attention. She shared how she grew up not liking her forehead & lips and how they were not “in”. Even though now, those are some of her most beautiful features.

Her Instagram post prompted fellow TV stars – Lala Akindoju & Ufuoma McDermott to share their own stories. Lala posted about growing up not liking her jawline and feeling her face was bent. And Ufuoma opened up about not liking her height, the mole on her lip & her teeth.

Needless to say, these women had nothing to worry about as they all grew up beautifully. But what lessons can we draw from here?

Well, for starters, you are beautiful no matter how you look. It’s all about perception. If you say you’re beautiful, then no one can say you aren’t.

Secondly, don’t sweat the small stuff. Having a larger forehead, darker skin, strong facial features, moles, discolouration etc does not define you. It’s what’s inside that counts. We can learn that from Zainab Balogun, Lala Akindoju & Ufuoma McDermott who are accomplished actresses, ambassadors, business owners and thriving members of society. Imagine if Zainab had decided her facial features were not suited for TV? Or that Lala had listened to people who said her features were too strong for a role. Or if Ufuoma has let her height keep her from gracing our TV screens. They wouldn’t be the amazing women we know today. They’re changing the narrative of beauty standards in Nigeria and Africa at large.

Do not let any negative image of yourself settle as the opinion you have of yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not good enough…even yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t be. You are beautiful and the only opinion that matters is yours!
