Women We Love – Myleik Teele
You know one of those aunties that constantly exudes sage-like wisdom – that one aunt you can always trust for the best advice, from relationship to career to just any kind of issues you might have, well Myleik Teele is that virtual big sister for all of us.
Myleik is the creator of curlBOX, the first monthly subscription service for black women with natural hair. Prior to launching curlBOX, Myleik’s resume boasts of a successful career in PR, doing notable work for major brands like The Grammy Awards, American Idols, Nike, Calvin Klein and a stellar roster of clients across the entertainment, tech, and beauty industries, including iconic musicians like Prince, Linkin Park and Travis Barker.
It wasn’t until the 2008 plane crash that killed her friend of which Barker was a survivor that Myleik had a wakeup call. In an Interview with Nicole Kane of xoNecole, she shared how being at her friend’s funeral caused her to question her life choices and if she was fully living.
That same year, she quit her job, packed up and moved to Atlanta from LA with $7,000 –her life savings. Securing a job in Atlanta was a struggle; this caused her to sign up for a babysitter job online. Soon after, she was contacted by Kim Zolciak from The Real Housewives of Atlanta for a job. She worked as a personal assistant to the reality star for a year before branching off in 2010 to launch her boutique PR firm.
When friend-turned-client Ken Burkeen, founder of the Huetiful Hair Steamer, hired her to do PR, she started attending hair meetups and shows, where she noticed a lack of sample products geared towards black women. This sparked the idea for curlBOX.
Since the launch of curlBOX in 2011, L’Oreal, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Target, Walmart, and SheaMoisture is a short list of brands that have trusted Myleik’s vision of making the lives of black women easier by providing them with the high-quality selection of products they deserve.
A teacher at heart, her wildly popular, #MyTaughtYou podcast has become her global classroom where women from all walks of life tune in for guidance and a healthy dose of motivation to live life on their own terms. In 2016, #MyTaughtYou saw over 2 million downloads and the listenership continues to grow.
Myleik Teele is a woman who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go after it. She regularly gives inspiring talks around the country centered on business, personal branding, and women’s empowerment. She launched the MyRetreat in 2018, and it is basically a weekend gathering of women learning, pouring and filling each other up giving those of us who religiously follow the posts on social media serious FOMO vibes.
