A CALL FOR ACTION: GET YOUR BRAVE ON LADIES AND #BE BOLD FOR CHANGE
The International Women’s day is an annual global event that holds on the 8th of March in honor of every woman worldwide.
The earliest Women’s day observance was held on February 28th 1909, in New York. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America in remembrance of the strike of the International Ladies Garment Workers union. The year after that, August 1910, German socialist Luise Zietz proposed the establishment of a day to celebrate and promote equal rights and suffrage for women. The idea was well received by the delegates who consisted of 100 women from 17 countries and international Woman’s Day was born as a result of that decision. From that day, and in the years leading up to 1914, Women across several countries observed several public demonstrations, protests and marches, regarding women issues until the 8th of March 1914 became the official date.
Fast forward to 2017, and the struggle for gender equality is still on. Although it can be argued that we have made great strides especially with more female CEO’s, more women in the boardroom and classrooms, and an increased number of impressive female role models figures inspiring little girls to believe and dream, one cannot ignore the myriad of issues that still plagues women and girls.
In many countries gender discrimination is still a big issue, women are still being underpaid in comparison to their male counterparts, women are still not present in equal numbers in business and politics, in some countries women are still not allowed to vote while women in some other countries are fighting to be accepted as equals with their male counterparts.
This is why the annual International Women’s Day and what it stands for is important. It is a day that seeks to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This year’s theme tagged #BoldForChnage is a call for action to all women and the society at large. It is time to be intentional and make a difference no matter how small.
We charge you this day and in the ones to come; challenge yourself, you need to be brave enough to think differently and bold enough to believe you can. If you are able to think it then it can be achieved. Nothing is impossible you just have to try. Say no to mediocrity, refuse to be silenced. Get your brave on ladies and #BEBOLDFORCHANGE.
