Nigerian Writers Condemn Ban On Sudanese Writers Union (SWU)
In a report in the Punch News Paper today, the Nigerian Writers and the Association of Nigerian Authors have kicked against the ban on Sudanese Writers Union by the Republic of Sudan.
Though the Sudanese Governemnt accused the Sudanese Writers Union of carrying out activities that ran contrary to the provisions regulating the activity of the national cultural groups and SWU statute, the Nigerian writers association have considered this move unacceptable owing to their commitment to nurture development through creativity and the provision of spaces for the intercourse of ideas.
The report went on to state that the SWU was banned for 16 years and only just reorganised in 2006 only to be faced with another ban now. President of PEN Nigeria, Tade Ipadeola was quoted to have said,
The decision of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir to ban the Sudanese Writer’s Union will push Sudan back into the dark ages.
