MMIA Cleaner Who Returned Passenger’s Lost N12 Million Rewarded with N7,200 Salary Increment: Still below Minimum Wage.

Cleaner

Josephine Ugwu, an airport cleaner with Patovilki Cleaning Services was recently rewarded with a salary increase of 15,000 Naira from 7,800 Naira after she returned foreign currencies to the tune of 12million Naira. Her colleagues have criticized the act by the management as unfair saying that it was unrewarding and disappointing since this was not the first time that Josephine had found huge amount of money and returned it.

Tw magazine brought it up for discussion among some young women in their 20s and the conversation was quite mind boggling. All I could deduce is that these young people are of the opinion that since all this woman got was an increase that isn’t up to the minimum wage, maybe she shouldn’t have returned the money in the first place.

This story takes us back to Mr. Lateef Salami an airport cleaner who and returned N 7 Million to its owner and other worthy recipients, but nothing was given to reward him, however tw magazine took it upon themselves to honour him for his honesty. He & his wife were treated to a night at a fancy hotel and N100,000 was raised for him to start his own fish pond.

Faith however thought differently from most of the people we spoke to. She said she would be proud of Josephine if she were her mum. “The society doesn’t owe you the reward. It is commendable but don’t expect anything. Your reward is in heaven”, she says.

All I can see is that this woman is honest and yet her honest hasn’t been recognized by anyone. It only goes to tell that these cleaners could decide to steal. I am not suggesting that we give her the world but even then, isn’t the salary illegal?
