Afghanistan has just appointed a  mother of five as their first woman police chief. 50-year-old Col. Jamila Bayaz was previously a  police officer at the Ministry of Interior’s offices in Kabul.

In a recent interview with NBC News, Bayaz stated that her appointment was a sign of progess.

“This is a chance not just for me, but for the women of Afghanistan,” she told NBC News Wednesday. “I will not waste it. I will prove that we can handle this burden.”

Currently there are 2,000 female police officers in Afghanistan, but Bayaz is the first to hold a senior rank.  Bayaz will be in charge of the 1st District of Kabul.
