You may not know where to start when it comes to attaining the goal of a healthy head of hair. You may also have been doing certain things to your hair that you thought were okay without knowing those things have been in the way of you achieving healthy long hair.

Find below good habits to cultivate so that you can achieve healthy long hair. Next week, we will be sharing the bad habits to loose, so stay tuned!

Good Habits To Cultivate

1. It all starts with how you wash your hair

We all wash our hair, but do you know there is a technique used when washing hair to avoid hair tangles and breakage in the process? Wash and dry your hair in one direction. If your hair is under running water, let it flow down in one direction as you apply shampoo and cleanse the scalp this is because hair is most fragile when wet and moving it around can lead to tangles which lead to breakage, same goes for drying especially if you air dry. Section, detangle and leave the hair to dry out in one direction. For natural hair ladies with short hair, it helps if you section your hair into sections of about six while you shampoo. This is so you can work with small sections and avoid tangles and knots as you cleanse your hair.

2. Know the difference between a Moisturizer and a Styler.

This point is especially important for naturals. A moisturizer or leave in conditioner most times will not do the work of a styling pudding or curl serum for instance. So if you want manageable hair free of tangles and infused with moisture. you can’t rely on a styling product for this. For a well-defined twist out sure to turn heads, you can’t rely on your moisturizer! Ensure that you use the right product to get the job done.

3. Go Organic for hair treatments.

This is because these ingredients are in their purest form. Things like bananas, avocados, pure honey, shea butter, aloe Vera gel, eggs, palm oil are packed with rich nutrients to strengthen and manage the hair, they can be incorporated with regular conditioners and oils for more potent hair treatments. One must however seek expert advice on how to go about making effective treatments with such ingredients.

4. Protective styling.

One of the most effective ways to retain length is to avoid over manipulation of the hair and keep the ends of the hair tucked away in a protective style. There are different options, from buns to braids to wigs. There is a caveat though: leave protective styles in your hair for too and they can cause tangles, matting and breakage! For a protective style to be effective, ensure that your actual hair is truly preserved and finally, let the take down process be done carefully without stress on your hair.

5. Trim Regularly

The final habit to note is to get regular trims; for some ladies with great elasticity and minimal split ends, trims can be done only on relaxer day or for naturals every three to six months. But, if you see one too many split ends, one too many times, then you want to trim more than just on relaxer day or twice/thrice a year. You also want to do what is aptly called dusting, regular mini trims that keep the split ends at bay. Keep a record of the trims so these are scheduled trims and not just done randomly.
