#MondayMotivation: Passion Makes Everything Better
Here’s a #MondayMotivation we think you’d really like.
Last night, we (and by ‘we’ I mean Me) had the pleasure of attending the premiere of Marcy Dolapo Oni’s passion project – “Omo Wa”. It was a beautiful event with amazing people all there to support the film.
On arrival, I had the chance to chat with the Director of the film – Seyi Babatope on making the movie. When I asked if this movie felt different from the others, his answer was one that was riddled with the truth. He said, “This one does…cause I genuinely want this to work for her (Dolapo)”. You could immediately tell that Dolapo’s passion for this project was infectious, and everyone there had caught the bug. From the members of the panel like Anita Okoye, Noble Igwe, Toyosi Etim-Effiong and more, to the guests like myself, Liz Osho, Bez Idakula and many others, we all had some level of relatability to the theme of the movie and all it unpacked.
The story of a husband and wife expecting a bundle of joy, the ups and downs that come with body change and taking responsibility for the child- it’s all a rollercoaster of emotions that Dolapo and the cast and crew of “Ome Wa” brought to life on wheels of passion. Hearing Dolapo speak on this project showed her intense passion for all things relationships and her desire to explore its not so easy terrain. Nothing could make her chase this down more than passion and the desire to change the narrative. You could hear it in her voice, in how she described the movie and her willingness to talk about her own life and experiences.
And it got us thinking. What was the last thing we did this passionately? We can count our daily routine and what we do on a regular day, but what about the heart-thumpers? Those passion projects that make you sweat from anticipation and bring you the genuine thrill of your life? Those ones that hit too close to home for comfort and make you want to be a better person and impact everyone around you? What was the last project you were a part of that genuinely spoke true to who you are?
If you haven’t had a passion project in a while, then perhaps it’s time to get into it. Think about the things that genuinely get you going – children, social media, construction, displaced immigrants – anything that genuinely tugs on your heartstrings, and turn that into something more. Let that be the fuel that drives you to bring people together and have conversations that can change narratives. Let that be one of the things that you can say you did, that imprinted on those around you.
Passion makes everything better, and I believe, if you put your heart in the things you do, there’s no way you won’t succeed. And no way you won’t make your world a better place. You can trust me on that.
So here’s to wearing our passion on our sleeves and changing the narrative, one day at a time.
