Keep Your Peace Of Mind: 9 Things To Do When You Have No Job Security

Whether we like to admit it or not, no job seems safe these days. Sure there are some that may prove to be more resilient than others (check out this recent story for more detail on that), but practically anyone can end up with a pink slip in their hand at any moment in time. These days, it really seems like you should get a gold medal for staying at the same job and retiring. Even though we are unable to control our employers, we can seize the day when it comes to making moves on our end. Here are some steps you can take to help give you a peace of mind and some permanence in a job that no longer offers security.

Create a career plan

One of the very first things you should do for yourself regardless of job security is to create a career plan. Where would you like to see yourself in the next three to five years? What are some short-term goals you can work to accomplish now? Sometimes in life, we can get so caught up in the right now and making end’s meet that we fail to look at the bigger picture.

Sign up for job alerts

This may seem a bit like a no-brainer but many don’t start looking for a job until it’s too late. Why wait until you hear about potential layoffs to cast out your net of possibilities? Sign up for daily or weekly job alerts where you can stay in the know about any potential career opportunities. Who knows, you just may come across your dream job in your search. Jobberman & Nigeria Best Jobs are a good place to start.

Freshen up your Linkedin profile
LinkedIn is a huge business platform for networking. If you have yet to make a profile you are really missing out. There are even job postings companies list on the site that may or may not pop-up elsewhere. Having an up-to-date and glowing profile can attract the attention of future employers. Bottom line: make sure you have a good one. We can help with that too.

Consider a side business

If you have been playing around with the idea of going into business for yourself, try out your dreams with a side business. Most aren’t willing to just up and leave a job, even if there is no job security. Working on your off time however can bring some promising rewards. You can earn additional money and possibly create a strong enough foundation to continue on your path to entrepreneurship.

Create a stronger presence at work
If you are just doing what’s necessary to get by at work, you may not rank high on your employer’s list of people to keep in the event things turn sour. Step outside of your comfort zone and build up your presence at work… for the good. Head up new projects, take the lead during meetings, just do something to make you stand out and show you are a team player. Even if there are no extra opportunities to go around, your boss should appreciate the initiative and your willingness to make a splash.

Build up the emergency savings
Given today’s economy, it’s extremely important to have an emergency savings fund. If you can, try putting away necessary monies for bills and everyday living that can last three to six months (more if you are able). In the event you experience financial difficulties including a layoff, you can rest a little easier knowing you have funds in place to hold down your home .

Stay up-to-date on skills
If there are any continuing education or certification opportunities your job sponsors, take them. Keeping up-to-date on your skills will only make you better on the job and also more marketable. Should you be an expert in what you do, consider learning new skills that you can use as a stepping stone for a higher position.

Make your employer successful
Before you roll your eyes, just listen up a bit. The thought of making your employer successful is not to convey that the entire fate of your company lies solely on your shoulders. What you should ask yourself is if you are doing everything within your powers to see some sort of increase in your position. Are you meeting your quarterly numbers, or coming in with the bare minimum? This is a hard reality but very important as many jobs tend to look at productivity and the end result when creating a list of who they plan to let go, and who they need to keep around.

Sell yourself
If you’re awesome and you know it, tell the world! Sometimes when the going gets tough, you gotta roll up your sleeves and pave a way – even if there is no visible one ahead. Become your own PR specialist on your job focusing on your strengths, accomplishments and what you bring to the table. Even if there is no new position for advancement, take a meeting with your manager in hopes to enhance your current job title given your shining achievements.
