Women We Love: Adesuwa Onyenokwe

Today’s Women We Love is a special one because we are celebrating our very own Editor In Chief, Adesuwa Onyenokwe. Her interview with Kemi Adetiba for the KING WOMEN series was released this week, and it was nothing short of powerful and inspiring, with heartfelt comments coming in from all over the world.  And the occasion was even made more special with the release of this beautiful portrait by TY Bello, a portrait that symbolizes what being a KING WOMAN is about.

For those of you who have not watched the episode, we have provided some brief teasers on what she discusses.

On Her Father’s Death

“For me the lesson I take away from my father’s death is that it is a full stop for him, and it’s going to be a full stop for a lot of us, and a lot of people that we love, so you are better off just telling whoever you love what you want to tell them because that full stop will happen.”

On Dating Her Husband.

“He was in Warri, and I was in Benin, then there were no phones. He will call me and talk and talk. After a while, I now asked him, ‘Where are you calling from?’ He told me he was calling from his older sister’s friend’s office. Then I knew that he was serious.”

On Her Marriage

“I like the fruits of marriage, but I know at what price you get that fruit. Anybody, who is not ready, there is no point getting in. I got those benefits simply because I was lucky to find the man I found, because I found a man who believed in marriage and was willing to work to make it happen.”

On Her Faith

“I met a man who is Catholic, who lives his faith and believed that we should get married in the Catholic church. So, I became Catholic and went to marry in the Catholic church. But I didn’t become Catholic until about seven or eight years into my marriage when I chose to become Catholic. Why did I choose it? Because I was exposed to some certain things, not by my husband. I sought, I read, I asked and I found faith. So, after that I tell my kids, ‘You know what, Religion, I will give you, but Faith, you will find. I can’t make you do anything.’”

On Hope

My father lived all his life, with a ‘red back account’ and he was never unhappy. Never…Who am I to be unhappy that I don’t have certain things that I will like to have now… because you see I told you my father taught me hope, that even if you didn’t get what you wanted today, you will get it tomorrow. That is what is the most important thing in my life.
