But whether it is a tummy ache, a stuffy nose, or a bug bite, doctors say that old-fashioned home remedies are often the best way to help children feel better fast. These time-tested treatments rarely have side effects, cost next to nothing, and are items you probably already have on hand.

Here are a few common natural home remedies you can use to combat them when next they come knocking:

• Honey for Common Cold: For children suffering from the common cold, raw honey is a good remedy (due to its antimicrobial properties). It also helps reduce nighttime coughing and improves sleep. (Note: Do not give honey to children under age one as it can cause infant botulism)
 
• Ginger for Asthma: Ginger is a time-honored natural treatment for Asthma. It’s anti-inflammatory property helps reduce airway inflammation and inhibits airway contraction. (Add honey to ginger juice for full effect) 
 
• Olive Oil for Earaches: Put 3 or 4 drops of lukewarm olive oil into your child’s ear canal. The oil will act like a lubricant causing the wax to soften, which you can then remove with cotton swabs. Be sure not to put the cotton swabs too far into the ear. (Applying a warm washcloth around the affected ear can also help relieve pain).
 
• Turmeric for Coughs: Turmeric is a good remedy for coughs due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral action. Mix ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk and give it to your child to drink. (Drinking warm lemonade can also help treat coughs in children)
