The phone, with a 5.7-inch screen and priced at about $850, was released weeks ahead of the iPhone 7 and Google’s Pixel phone. However they had to recall about 2.5 million phones (every single one of the product sold in China) after several reports of the device catching fire.
This led them to postpone the launch of the product in Nigeria indefinitely.
They encouraged buyers to trade in the phones for another replacement units alongside new batteries and promised that the bug has been fixed.
However because the replacements phones are reportedly catching fire too, yesterday Samsung announced it had halted the production of the device, as investigation is ongoing. They have also urged users to stop using the device for now.
“Because consumers’ safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7 while the investigation is taking place,” the company said.
“Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note 7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 devices should power down and stop using the device and take advantage of the remedies available,” it added.
