Nigeria Sex Offenders Register

Nigeria Sexual Offender Register has been launched!

The topic of rape is almost as old as time itself. And in recent times, we’ve seen just how deep it has eaten into the roots of society. From the church and educational sectors to within family and the service industry, social media has played an indispensable role in exposing rape culture in Nigeria, and Africa.

Taking the conversation further, there is now a sex offenders register to serve the Nigerian community. The Nigeria Sexual Offender Register is s documentation of reported, tried or convicted cases of sexual violations and gender-based violence, to name and shame those prosecuted for the abuse in order to deter potential offenders.

The register is a project under the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). It is funded by the Rule Of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) under the European Union and implemented by the British Council in Nigeria in collaboration with security agencies and civil society organizations across the country. In a recent interview, Priscilia Ankut (Programme Manager, RoLAC) told Premium Times that “The type of information of a convicted person that would be captured in the register include Bio-data, Biometric features, Addresses, BVN, DNA”. The register will be available online for public consumption and to help state actors to conduct background checks for offenders’ new identifications.
