Keep your white shoes white – hacks that work
Christian Louboutin says ‘Shoes transform your body language and attitude…’
What better way is there to show this attitude, than with white shoes. Specifically, white sneakers, as they are the saviors of any wardrobe, you can wear them year-round and they are convenient.
White is also an easy hack for conveying that your getup game is on fleek. And the best part? – white goes with everything! It reflects light so everyone can see the pep in your step.
However, the biggest problem is that they get dirty—a lot.
Despite your best attempts to not get your shoes dirty, if your feet are on the ground, they’re going to attract dirt. Life happens.
Fortunately, I’m here to give you easy hacks for how to clean white shoes and keep them sparkling, so don’t panic! Give these methods a try to save your trainers:
- Dedicated shoe cleaner
If you’re serious about your sneakers, buying a designated shoe cleaner is your best bet. Different shoe stores often sell their brands in bottles (many of which conveniently come with brush applicators). You should look for natural cleaners so harsh chemicals don’t wear away your shoes.
- DIY with vinegar and water
If you don’t want to pay for shoe-cleaning products, I recommend scrubbing dirt off with a mixture of two parts water to two parts white vinegar. Apply the solution with a cloth, and gently scrub. This method can work on any material (as long as the stain is fresh) but that it works best on leather.
- Baking soda
Baking soda helps to break up soil particles, with water, using it to scrub stains when you need to spot clean can be effective.
Canadian sneaker blogger Meredydd Hardie (who has 38,400 followers on Instagram and what she says are more pairs of sneakers than she’d like to count) agrees that baking soda works. She cautions to keep this method to white shoes only, as baking soda can discolor non-white shoes.
- Shoe wipes on-the-go
Keep wipes handy in all their jackets and bags for footwear emergencies.
And lastly, DON’T FORGET YOUR SHOELACES
No one wants to pair sparkling white shoes with dirty shoelaces. For a thorough clean, let them soak in a bowl for a day before washing them.
