Is it safe to visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka was hit by a spate of explosions in a shocking Easter Sunday tragedy. Police have said 207 people have been killed and 450 are injured. The UK Foreign Office has now updated their travel advice – so how safe is Sri Lanka at the moment?

Sri Lanka has suffered eight near-simultaneous explosions. There were six blasts initially – at three churches and three luxury hotels – followed by two more at a guest house and housing scheme. The explosions took place in Colombo and Negombo, in the south-west of the country, 37 kilometres apart. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has now updated their travel advice.

What is the Foreign Office’s travel advice for Sri Lanka?

“There have been a number of explosions in Sri Lanka, including Colombo, on Sunday 21 April,” the FCO wrote on their website.

“Please follow the instructions of local security officials and follow travel advice for updates.”
