EBONYLIFE & SONY JOIN FORCES ON FEMALE AFRICAN WARRIOR SERIES, SHOUT OUT TO GIRL POWER!

Sony has struck a three-series deal with Nigeria-based EbonyLife, to create an action drama inspired by the Dahomey Warriors, the female fighters who came together to protect their kingdom.

Dahomey’s female troops were not the only martial women of their time. There were at least a few contemporary examples of successful warrior queens, the best-known of whom was probably Nzinga of Matamba, one of the most important figures in 17th-century Angola—a ruler who fought the Portuguese, quaffed the blood of sacrificial victims, and kept a harem of 60 male concubines, whom she dressed in women’s clothes.

EbonyLife launched in 2013 as an upscale international black TV network. It produces 1,000 hours of English-language content a year. Its first feature film, “Fifty,” was picked up by Netflix and released worldwide. ‘The Royal Hibiscus’ premiered at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival in 2017.

According to the company’s CEO, Mo Abudu“ Ever since our launch in June 2013, our vision has always been to change the narrative about Africa and to tell our stories from our perspective,”
