PERIOD CRAMPS ARE AS PAINFUL AS HEART ATTACKS
The experience of having periods vary between women, some look forward to theirs with elation while some absolutely dread it because of how much pain and trauma they go through.
Most times, the reaction to period pain is usually met with scoffing remarks like ‘ah your own is too much’, ‘are you the first’, ‘why are you overdoing it‘,’ why can’t you be strong?
But thankfully, a hero has finally come to the rescue, in the person of John Guillebaud, a professor of reproductive health at University College, London.
He stated that the medical community has long ignored what can be a debilitating affliction because it is a ‘woman’s problem’
However, recent research has shown that menstrual pain is almost as bad as having a heart attack.
Period pains medically referred to as dysmenorrhea is so demoralizing for some women that it alters their day to day activity but not much has been done to investigate the actual cause of these pains.
Although there is a lapse in understanding as to what causes dysmenorrhea, some have inferred that menstrual irregularity, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, and stress are major causes.
A few tips have been thrown around here and there to suggest a relief to cramps and they include: eating foods rich in calcium and magnesium like Avocados, nuts, legumes. Fruits like pineapple, watermelon.
Also, indulging in a hot bath or some alcohol like whiskey. But basically, it is advisable you study yourself and find out what works or helps alleviate your cramps, maybe if period pain burned calories it would be worth it.
