Renowned fashion fabric brand, Vlisco in collaboration with A Whitespace Creative Agency (AWCA) officially launched Vlisco&Co Lagos edition on Friday 15th December, at Alara, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Famously known for its specially crafted fabrics, Vlisco has been designing and manufacturing distinctive Dutch wax fabrics, prominent amongst Africans for over 170 years. Vlisco&Co launched with the desire to reconnect the brand with a new generation of young, Nigerian based creatives, who used their own unique format to create new compelling narratives using the brands traditional aesthetics.

The Vlisco&Co platform has asked African designers, artists and creatives to explore the future of African print. How will tradition merge with modernity? How will the old be improved by the new? How can African design inspiration continue to play its role in creating local global narratives for the future?

The event started with an interactive session with  Karo Akpokiere in conversation with writer Ayodele Arigbabu , in a recreated studio titled ‘6 Stories of Disintergration’. The illustrations and sketches reimagined new forms and processes for recreating classic Vlisco patterns. Whilst the filmmaker, stylist and fashion-visualist, Daniel Obasi presented his inspired afro-futrism film titled, ‘An Alien in Town’.

The event also showcased a talented new generation of locally based Nigerian fashion designers. There was a presentation of commissioned collections by fashion designers, Abiola Olusola and Tokyo James. James also worked with photographer Terna Iwar on a fashion film of his collection, also showcased.

Aye! keeping the guests entertained, whilst they sipped delicious cocktails with his eclectically produced sound set. It was a truly unique evening which showcased the range of young talented in Nigeria, in the beautiful space that is Alara.

The event was well attended by celebrities and influencers including: Linda Ejiofor, Naeto and Nicole Chikwe, Dolapo Oni Sijuwade,  Bolanle Olukanni, Kayla Oniwo, Denola Grey, Simi Esiri, Fisayo Longe ,Akin Faminu , Sharon Ojong, Kessiana Edewor and many more.
