May 10th marks international Mother’s Day. This is a day when individuals take the time to celebrate Mothers, Mothers-to-be, and women in general. For the NGO, Run For a Cure Africa Breast Cancer Foundation (RFCA), this is a day to bring awareness and support to the breast cancer fight in Nigeria.

Run for a Cure Africa will hold it’s annual Mother’s Day Big Hat Brunch. A family event, where women and men come donning their best hat to celebrate the world’s most precious commodity, women. The day is complete with lunch, cocktails, entertainment, silent auction, and the crowds favourite, the Father’s Fashion Show.  Dads and gentlemen hit the runway and with each twirl and turn, they help RFCA fight breast cancer in Nigeria. RFCA is inviting families to their 3rd Annual Mother’s Day Big Hat Brunch at the  Oriental Hotel Lagos on Sunday, May 10, 2015, at 1 pm. Tickets are available at La Pointe Grocery in VI or through their website at www.rfcafrica.org. All proceeds will help RFCA educate, screen, and treat women for breast cancer in Nigeria.

Run for a Cure Africa’s  sole mission is to turn the 90{54d2fcdcd494adb6982253be6fe8d5492e5f586157f419110131714f9092ec60} mortality rate of breast cancer in Africa into a 90{54d2fcdcd494adb6982253be6fe8d5492e5f586157f419110131714f9092ec60} survival rate.
Since its inception, Run For a Cure Africa has moved into two other African countries, Ghana and Cameroon and recently launched RFCA in the United States. RFCA has purchased mammogram machines for hospitals in West Africa, provided the opportunity for free screenings for thousands of women, increased the awareness of breast cancer amongst West Africans, but most importantly, has had the privilege of providing funds for breast cancer treatment, and tripled the number of their participants, sponsors, and money raised.
Despite the ongoing challenges of running a nonprofit, Run for a Cure Africa is also faced with social challenges such as lack of resources in many African hospitals.  “The hardest thing is when a woman has to begin chemo and her chemo needs to get interrupted or discontinued because of a hospital strike, lack of funds, or closure of the hospital.” Says Ebele Mbanugo, founder and Executive Director.
