INEC Chairman, Jega To Appear Before Nigerian Senate
Written by Oma Ehiri
At the senate meeting held yesterday Feb. 17, the issue of the shift in the Nigerian polls was discussed by members of the house. After much deliberation, it was agreed as declared by the Senate President, David Mark, that the chairman of The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega be invited before the Senate house today (Feb. 18) to explain why the elections were postponed.
Members of the APC led by Bukola Saraki thought it was not necessary to call Jega but rather the service chiefs be invited, since he declared in his briefing that the reason for the shift was based on pressure from the service chiefs.
The Senate president however insisted that as a matter of protocol, Jega be invited to the house first and should he shift the blame on anybody, then that person(s) should be invited before the Senate.
Speaking on the rumored interim government, the senate president addressed the issue and was of the opinion that having an interim government was not in the best interest of Nigeria’s democracy.
