Priscilla Ekwere Eleje – Director of currency (CBN)
Is the world becoming a better place? There are many facets to the topic of a “better world” that many could argue for or against. But one thing we can agree, is that balance and diversity are thriving. Whether that makes the world “better”, we’ll leave to our readers.
Recent times have given women more avenues to exercise and create more positive impact in our society and economy. Priscilla Ekwere Eleje is a woman who falls well under this category and has recently reached a new milestone.
Mrs. Priscilla Ekwere Eleje has just become the first Nigerian woman to ever have her signature on the naira note, 59 years after the Nigerian currency was created.
This is no mean feat, as her new appointment as the first female director of currency at CBN and also the new Substantive Director of CBN is what mandates her signature on all new 1000 naira notes and in the sands of time.
She joins the likes of Ms Gumataotao Rios; the 43rd treasurer of the United States in being one of the few women in history to have their signatures on their country’s national currency.
A psychology graduate of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Nigeria; She holds a Banking and Management degree at Boston University, Massachusetts, USA and is a Certified Information System Auditor (CISA).
A position that has been held through the colonial era till date by men has finally seen a change in gender. A commendable achievement also by the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, in making a choice that others before him had deemed unnecessary or unwarranted.
We at TW want to issue a hearty congratulations to Mrs. Eleje on her achievement and hope to see more women rise to levels beyond the status quo.
