We kick things off with a woman who is truly a trailblazer – Juliet Ehimuan Chiazor!
Google is by far one of the largest companies in the world, requiring an equally large staff to execute its role in today’s technology-driven ecosystem. But in this male-driven sector, one woman has taken on the gargantuan task of managing Africa’s largest internet community. And that woman is Juliet Ehimuan Chiazor.
Juliet was appointed the Google Country Manager in Nigeria in April of 2011 and has been steadily climbing in her vision to make a difference with technology in Africa. With over 12 years of education and work experience under her belt, she has been the mastermind behind creating innovative solutions for the Nigerian community.
One of such innovations was the 2011 nation-wide program called ‘Get Nigerian Businesses Online’ where business owners could get tutored on how to create their own websites in a few hours, and even have them listed on Google Maps.
With a key understanding of working systems, Juliet believes women have a unique role to play in the Nigerian tech space and need the support & knowledge Google offers through its women-focused programs. In light of this, Google launched a program for female developers called Women Techmakers, with the aim to support female developers.
With this program, women now have more access to curated content as well as a variety of tools from Google, its partners and a global tech ecosystem.
In light of her delicate job, you might wonder how Juliet manages to have a work-life balance. But she credits a sane work and life balance to her family’s support. She’s been quoted saying – “Some people give that impression but I’m by no means superwoman. The robust support from my family, in general, has made all the difference in being able to maintain balance and I think that is key when you’re raising a family.“.
We applaud Juliet and all that she does to ensure our curiosity and drive have platforms of expression.
