A HIGH FLYER DIPS

Rotimi, who is an engineer, describes himself as a perfectionist, and perhaps this is what has also made him an introspective person. “I think too much. I’m the kind of person that would go home after a day at work and think through over any major episodes and start running them through my mind saying, ‘Mehn! messed up there o, did I do well there?’

‘Oh yeah, I showed them well there, my presentation was smack.'”

So, when he came back from an assignment in the United States in 2003, loaded with new knowledge and expectations, and eager to make an impact, it was a somewhat big blow to hear negative feedback about his performance. “For the first time, I felt like I was under pressure. I mean, I had always been good at what 1 did. I had always been a good engineer, I had always been thorough, and I had always got good performance asessments.”

According to Rotimi the job responsibilities that were assigned to him in Nigeria, were already assigned to someone else in Houston, which meant that in essence, he was jobless. “I was just kind of providing back up in some things, and despite highlighting the lack of tangible responsibilities to my boss at the time, nothing changed.

Rotimi never got over the fact that his competence had been questioned, even after he moved back to the US, despite still getting a promotion that year. “I did not recover as I usually would from bad news’ and that’s where the whole journey started … ‘what’s going on, why can’t I just get out of this thing? I’m in the US, I’m supposed to be happy.'”
