Charleston church shooting: Prayers held across US | BBC

Prayers have been held across the United States after the killing of nine people at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina. The suspect, Dylann Roof, 21, was detained while driving in Shelby, North Carolina, about 200 miles away. After a court appearance on Thursday, Mr Roof waived his right to extradition and was flown back to South Carolina.

Prominent Nigerians including Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara),  Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti) and Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) respectively Thursday called on Nigerians, especially the adherents of the Islamic faith, to use the opportunity provided by the holy month of Ramadan to intensify prayers for peace, unity and stability of the country. There charge was  contained in their messages to commemorate the start of the month-long Ramadan, which commenced Thursday.

In a goodwill message to Muslims issued by his spokesman, Turaki Hassan, Dogara said the present crop of leaders in Nigeria came in at a very critical time.

The Speaker said the promise of change by the new government could only be realised if Nigerians rededicate themselves to the service of God and humanity.

THE lawmaker representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District, Senator Ben Murray Bruce, has said that in the spirit of the month of Ramadan observed by Muslim faithfuls, he will not respond to critics over his decision to donate half of his wardrobe allowance to the unpaid workers in Osun state.

“I’ll take whatever attacks come my way but nothing & nobody can dissuade me from doing what my conscience directs in helping my fellow man.
