Germany Wins The 2014 World Cup. As Mario Götze Scores Winning Goal Against Argentina
by Amanda Wilcox
After a month of entertaining football, laden with shocks and revelations, the German National Team has won the 2014 FIFA World Cup!
The “German Machines” who have cruised through the competition—save for a grueling 2-2 draw with Ghana and a hard-fought win against Algeria—most notably beat the hosts, Brazil, 7-1 in a thrilling semi-final match. While the final against Argentina in the Maracanã was not nearly as open as said semi-final, we still saw the undeniably quality of the German team, as Mario Götze’s goal in extra-time gave the Germans their first World Cup in 24 years, and their first since the reunification of Germany.
Joachim Löw also continued the World Cup tradition that the winning nation’s manager is actually from that nation. Other events following that match included the highly praised James Rodriquez of Colombia winning the Golden Boot, Manuel Neuer of Germany winning the Golden Glove, and the much-disputed decision to award Lionel Messi the Golden Ball, with many people thinking it was awarded to him out of pity. Either way, the 2014 World Cup was arguably one of the most entertaining to date.
Congratulations to Die Nationalmannschaft!
