The 2015 AMVCAs: A Review From A Viewer At Home

Africa’s film industry’s biggest award show held on Saturday March 7, 2015 and I was glued to my tv screen from start to finish. I believe the AMVCA’s have the potential to be the African Oscars and my hopes were not dashed.

From Derenle’s golden see through dress, (yes! Derenle wore a dress) to Susan Peters’ bird like outfit to Alex Ekubo’s rubik’s cube like tuxedo, this year’s red carpet was definitely colourful.

My personal favourites however were Genevieve Nnaji’s yellow dress by Elvira Jude, Eku Edewor’s teal dress by Clan and Beverly Naya’s classic black jumpsuit by UK brand Reiss.

Now on to the show proper, I think the hosts, Vimbai Mutinhiri and Ik Osakioduwa were exceptional and deserve awards themselves. October 1 was definitely the star of the show but the speech that nearly had me in tears was by Femi Jacob. I think all the winners deserved their awards as Tunde Babalola said during his second speech, “Making a movie is hard but making a movie in Africa is so much harder.”

I was a bit let down by The Mavin’s Dorobucci performance because not only did I expect them to perform one of their newer songs but I also expected them to have been given more time. On a brighter note, I LOVED the P-Square’s performance and I think it was the perfect way to round off the spectacular show.

I thought this year’s AMVCA’s was brilliant but I hope to see more non Nigerian winners next year!

Did you watch the AMVCA’s? What did you think of the show, red carpet & winners?
