PRESENTING: THE OSCARS 2017
The 89th Academy Awards ceremony held last night at the Dolby Theatre Los Angeles California, United States. The revered Oscars Awards have been known to honor amazing actors and movies in Hollywood and last night’s show did not disappoint. It was a night of glitz and glam as usual, heart-warming acceptance speeches, thigh high slits and red carpet glam. The event was hosted by ace presenter and king of late night television Jimmy Kimmel. Didn’t get to watch the show, or you need a quick recap? We’ve got you covered!

La La Land was the big winner for the night, with six awards. They almost completed their winning streak with the award for best picture, which was mistakenly presented to them instead of Moonlight. Viola Davis broke a record after receiving the award for her role in Fences, by becoming the first black woman to win an Oscar, Tony and Emmy in an acting role. Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar and at 32, Damien Chazelle became the youngest director to win an Oscar. Also, Kevin O’Connell won the award for sound mixing for Hacksaw Ridge, on the 21st attempt, thereby ending the longest losing streak in the history of the Oscars.

As expected, there were various political nuances surrounding the show, including Jimmy Kimmel’s live tweet at President Donald Trump. Actor Gael García Bernal said, “As a Mexican, as a migrant worker and as a human being, I am against any form of wall that wants to separate us,” referring to Trump’s proposed border wall with Mexico. Suicide Squad’s Alessandro Bertolazzi meanwhile, who is Italian, dedicated his best makeup and hair styling award to “all the immigrants”. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who won the best foreign film award for The Salesman, boycotted the ceremony over Trump’s travel ban, saying in a statement, “My absence is out of respect for the people of my country, and those of the other six nations who have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the US … Dividing the world into the ‘us’ and ‘enemies’ categories creates fear.”
In usual Academy Awards Fashion, their annual “Gone but not Forgotten” In Memoriam montage post humously honoured some of HollyWood’s biggest stars who passed on between last year and this time. Debbie Reynolds and her daughter Carrie Fisher who died a day apart, David Bowie, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Gary Marshall, 27 year old Anton Yelchin, Bill Paxton who unexpectedly passed on the previous night amongst others got their due homage. Singer-Songwriter Sara Bareilles gave a brilliant rendition of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides Now’ while the footage showed.
And it wouldn’t be an award show without the weird stuff that go viral. We have Nicole Kidman to thank for inventing the introverted clap now dubbed ‘the boomerang clap’ on social media. There was a bit of the Steve Harvey Miss Universe repeat Fiasco when the movie La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner of best motion picture. The cast and crew had already made their way to the stage when the error was noticed. They had to exit the stage amidst feigned giggles, awkward hugs and laughter, and harried apologies. Eventually the real winners; cast of Moonlight were called on stage to receive their award. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway completely stole the show after being the first presenters to ever present an award to the wrong recipient.
