Maverick, Mother, Musician

Beyoncé is 37. It seems only yesterday, 20 years ago that Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter was formally introduced to the world. And since then, the world has been continually regaled with breath-taking, chart-topping music and has witnessed her evolution from independent woman to wife, mother and icon.

The Destiny’s Child

Starting out as the lead singer of the popular girl band, Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé rose to fame. Following their breakup in 2006, Beyoncé began working tirelessly on her solo career, producing 6 albums which have garnered both critical and commercial success. In 2010, she went on a musical hiatus for a year, in order to take over management of her career. She has also received numerous merit and lifetime achievement awards.

She and Jay-Z have been together for 16 years. Their marriage became strained after Jay-Z was caught having an affair. This prompted Beyoncé to create an album based on this experience. You can say she used ‘lemons’ to make ‘lemonade’ because the album was one of the best-selling albums the year of its release. Today, they remain stronger than ever and have three children: Blue Ivy, 6, and twins, Rumi and Sir,1. They are currently on their second collaborative tour OTR 2.

The Carters

In 2013, Beyoncé stated in a Vogue interview that she considers herself to be a modern-day feminist. She sampled a speech delivered by Chimamanda Adichie for her hit song, ‘Flawless’, which has been hailed as an anthem for women everywhere. Beyoncé continues to advocate for movements such as Black Lives’ Matter and featured the mothers of the victims of police brutality for her video ‘Formation’. She embraces her heritage and culture and it is evident that her daughter, Blue Ivy is taking after her.

Regardless of her marital problems or the fact that she has three children to look after, she has shown that you can be in the music industry and still have time to be a wife, mother and use your platform to make a difference. She is a living legend and by the look of things, she doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.

Going around the TW office, I decided to ask some my colleagues their thoughts. A.O says “I doff my hat to her because she has held her own, through the times. She is a modern-day superwoman. She has dominated the industry for years and has not let anything stand in her way. She’s 37 now and I’m even sure that at 60, she’ll still be making music and selling out arenas”.

“Beyoncé inspires me because of her work ethic. NOBODY works harder than her. I always wonder how she does it: Wife. Mother. Music Icon. Human Activist. On days that are overwhelming, I always ask myself, What Would Beyoncé Do?”, says Jhene.

Clearly our recap of her life and our comments show that the tw tribe love Beyoncé because she symbolizes the strength of a woman with her awesome staying power… question is do you agree? Let us know
