Wsquare to organise women-led ‘HerTech’ Hackathon in partnership with Facebook

The two-day Hackathon focuses on encouraging more women to enter AI. Only 22{54d2fcdcd494adb6982253be6fe8d5492e5f586157f419110131714f9092ec60} of professionals who work in artificial intelligence across the globe are female, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report. And with the interest in AI increasing exponentially thanks to it being one of the highest paid jobs, there still remains a huge gender gap.

To address this gap, Women co-working space Wsquare is partnering with Facebook and ThoughtWorks to launch a women-led hackathon HerTech across Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Bengaluru from March to June 2019. The first edition will be held in Bengaluru on March 30-31. The two-day Hackathon focuses on encouraging women to enter AI.

The idea is to bust the myth that women in technology are lesser in number and break gender stereotype through these programs. Applications for the Hackathon are open.

As part of this Hackathon, WSquare has partnered with JobsforHer and AnitaB.org, one of the largest communities for women that focuses on women in technology and back to work opportunities mentors from senior level management in AI and robotics and investors and venture capitalists who support women leaders in technology.

Women taking part in the Hackathon will get access to specially curated beginner and advanced courses in AI and Machine Learning for the winner by IIT-Madras professors ThoughtWorks as part of their Vaapsi Initiative, will host the hackathon in their offices, across the four cities.

This free hackathon is aimed at female students interested in a career in AI and women in technology returning back to work after a break and women-led tech startups. Top 20 teams will be picked by the Jury on finding solutions for problem statements addressed for women entrepreneurs. “Participants will spend 24 hours on coding, validating their ideas, networking followed by a Demo of their Prototype to a panel of VCs, entrepreneurs, and sponsors. A mentor from the business development side and a technology expert will be assigned to the teams,” Vandhana Ramanathan, Co-Founder and CEO of WSquare said. The problem statements to be addressed include using AI, with access to traffic data, to optimise total journey time including access time, waiting time and travel time for women and through AI, utilizing a range of traffic data sets on safe routes to travel through human-like decisions on route selection.

With information on dynamic tolls and traffic flows on links, AI can identify public spots, safe zones around the area for safety, alleviating cities of this major issue. “The Hertech Hackathon in Bengaluru on March 30 and 31 will have women teams creating a prototype on problem statements like Traffic Control, Women Safety.
