On the 8th of March, was International Women’s Day and I spent the day thinking about women all over the world.

Some may ask why this day is celebrated as it seems like we already have many rights that make us equal to men. After pondering and researching, I found that not every woman on Earth has the same rights as us, and this is why we still celebrate this day to continue our fight for more equality.

I. Countries where the law states women aren’t equal to men

In Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan for example, women have to wear a “Abaya” or a “Burqa” so no one can see their skin. and they’re not allowed to drive or go to certain places. There are special places for families (women & children) and places where only men are accepted.

In Sudan, it may be even worse, you are not allowed to celebrate Woman’s Day.

II. Countries where there is a law but not respected

We can take the last well known rape case in India as an example. You probably heard about it, a young woman on the street at 9 P.M was kidnapped by 5 men and they raped her one after the other.

The population reacted to this and made a big protest to show their anger and discontent. The rapists, to defend themselves said “Proper woman don’t hang in the street at 9 P.M.” and “Her life doesn’t have any value”.

After this, The Court had a trial and sentenced them to death.

III. Inequality in jobs and salaries

Even in developed countries, there are still inequalities such as lower salaries for women doing the same work as men. Also, the important jobs with a lot of responsibilities are given to more men than women.

Laws are created to obligate people to employ as many women as men but it won’t change if the mentality of the population doesn’t change.

So we need to educate and inform people now!
