Important secrets to living alone successfully.
As a kid you couldn’t wait to stop running an errand for your African parents, it could be cleaning up the house, arranging the kitchen, washing the dishes, calling you to come to pass the remote or even having a curfew cutting all your fun night out short.
All these errands got you fed sometimes and started counting down to being independent and living alone. Now, reality has kicked in you are done with school, you are now a full-time bachelor or spinster with a good job so you think you deserve to be in a house all by yourself.
You decide to move out and live all by yourself and now you are confused on how you would survive living alone.
Living independently can be awesome. You don’t have to clean up after someone else or better still clean up if you are the messy type. You can organize your stuff exactly how you like it. You can throw parties into the night or keep late nights out without anybody questioning you.
You are the master of your territory. You are absolutely free to do whatever you like within your domain. That being said, there are some challenges to living alone like feeling lonely. Although occasional feelings of loneliness are natural, why feel so alone when you don’t have to? There are things you can do to create a home that repels loneliness when you live alone.
Make daily rituals that highlight the joys of living alone
Love to dance in your room to Wizkid every morning? Embarrassing if you have roommates, totally cool if you have the only person to see your moves is yourself. Think about what it is it that you love about living alone and try to find ways to indulge in it every day. If it is eating large portions of food or eating right of the ice cream container, go for it! (Just make sure you think about your health)
Create! Create! Create!
To create is one of the most important things you can do in your life. To create distractions from a sea of people or even just one person seeking for your attention is one of the most difficult things in life.
When you are alone, the one only one distraction from creating the work you are capable of is yourself. All excuses are gone. When you are alone, you can lose yourself in your work. Losing yourself in your work could mean creating something truly meaning.
Your other option is to ignore that call to create and look for temporary comfort in things and people who eventually leave you unfulfilled. Take advantage of your loneliness.
