Endometriosis is the abnormal growth of endometrial cells beyond the uterine cavity. By their nature, these cells should only be located in the uterus. About 176 million women worldwide suffer from this disease.

Endometrial cells can be found on the ovaries, outer uterine walls, and fallopian tubes, or they can spread to the peritoneum, intestines and other organs.
