Shifting Shores – A Migrant’s Travel Guide

In a time where it seems like your passport has been blacklisted by every foreign immigration service in the world, the idea of migration could easily be seen as a fool’s errand.

Adding to the fact that most countries not only have strict guidelines for admittance but also charge a great deal for the privilege, it doesn’t help to be pre-assessed as a possible hooligan or criminal.

Daunting. But not everyone is governed by the odds. Migration could be the next best decision of your life, even as a Nigerian! You could be looking for better opportunities as a skilled professional or you could be a retiree looking to rest in uncharted territory. As long as you’re willing to go through legitimate channels and procedure, here are four (4) countries we pulled up from our research, that are more than willing to accommodate you.

Belgium

Belgium is one of the smallest countries in northern Europe. Quaint towns full of breathtaking architecture, stunning natural beauty, thriving arts and music scene, diverse community amenities and some of the best-tasting beer and chocolate around makes it a very attractive choice…as long as you’re not retiring.

Gaining permanent residency in Belgium would require you to secure a job. You can apply for jobs from your home country, and once you land a gig, you will be offered a residency permit after holding it for just two weeks. Though it is not initially an invitation for permanent residency, as long as you keep your job, you’ll be advancing toward that goal.

Canada

Canada has a reputation as one of the friendliest countries in the world, and it shows in its immigration policy. Canada has recently opened its borders with compassion for refugees from war-torn nations. But if you’re not afraid for your life, Canada looks very closely at your professional qualifications before inviting you.

If you do have a professional skill set or education that matches up with Canada’s current needs, you may be able to take advantage of an express entry program that can get you an approval in no time flat.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica has long been attracting expats due to its gorgeous beaches, world-class healthcare, and friendly population. The way of life in Costa Rica is peaceful and easy-going with a very reasonable cost of living.

Costa Rica has a retiree program that requires $1,000 per month in income to qualify. Otherwise, you will need a job in order to get on the path to permanent residency and eventually citizenship.

Panama

Panama is a great choice if you appreciate American landscapes. While officially an independent nation in Central America, Panama has a landscape reminiscent of Florida, and a lot of English speakers. The country also has a reputation for being safe and well developed.

One of the most popular ways people use in migrating to Panama is a retiree visa. It requires a monthly income of about $1,000. If you’re not a retiree, a $5,000 deposit in a Panamanian bank is the door to permanent residency.
