The coastline of Benin Republic is cushioned with elegant coconut trees, swaying to the rhythm of the Atlantic Ocean. All the elements of paradise are intact — the Sun, sand, sea and fresh coconuts. This small Francophone country is close enough to be affordable but far enough to provide a true escape.

Getting There:

The best way to get to Benin Republic from Nigeria is by road. The drive to Seme border could take as little as two hours, if you set out in the morning and beat the traffic.

Even though Nigeria is a member of ECOWAS / CEDEAO — Economic Community of West African States — which grants all citizens visa-free access within the region — you will be required to pay for stamps and signatures. Every traveler requires a valid ECOWAS passport or a National ID Card (other passports require Benin Republic visas). You will also need a valid yellow fever card. Thinking of driving yourself, every motor vehicle requires purchase of a laissez passer. Nonetheless, you can brave the experience or employ a certified tour service or clearance agent to ease the process for you. Once you get through the border, it is a smooth drive to Cotonou (30mins), Ouidah (1 hr) or Grand Popo (2 hrs).

Where to Stay:

There’s no other place like Casa del Papa in Ouidah, Benin Republic. The yellow resort is the largest in Ouidah and is built on prime property located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagoon. At Casa del Papa, the traditional and modern meld to create magic. You can also stay at the boutique Maison Rouge villas in Cotonou or the Hotel Ibis Cotonou.

What to Do:

Benin Republic has a good mix of activities. Go kayaking and paddle boarding along the lagoon at Casa del Papa. Feeling tired and sore? Choose from multiple massage options. You can observe local fishing communities as they sing through their occupation or even ask to join their fishing circle.

Yet, there’s more than Benin Republic has to offer. Take a break from the beach-side and visit Lake Ganvie — one of the largest stilt communities in Africa. This community is nicknamed ‘the Venice of Africa’ and aptly so. Later, visit the sacred Python Temple and learn about the religious history of the Beninoise people and their reverence for the python. Then, visit the famous slave route, including the Point of No Return. Don’t forget to stop by salt-making communities and enjoy the freshest fish.

The people of Benin Republic are warm and welcoming but remember to always seek permission before taking pictures of people. While we share similarities, (Benin Republic is similar to Nigeria) yet the country is different enough to inspire awe.
