Iman Builds a Fashionable Empire Outside of Modeling
With over 25 years in the modelling industry, the 58-year-old Iman Abdulmajid is no doubt a fashion icon.
“Through the years, I’ve learned what works for me,” she explains to Scene magazine in their latest issue. “I paid attention to details. I looked at old photographs. And I made sure that I had control over my image. I’ve always believed that images are a model’s currency. So I always wanted to have some control and have a say about my images.”
And it is with that keen eye that she has leveraged her fashion sense into several successful business ventures.
After the launch of her makeup and skincare line, IMAN Cosmetics, the supermodel collaborated with Home Shopping Network on a clothing line called IMAN Global Chic. The collection – complete with handbags and jewelry – became one of HSN’s two top sellers out of 200 collections sold by the shopping network.
Over the next two years, Iman launched IMAN Home Fabrics, which made its Fashion Week debut via a custom-designed lounge, and destinationiman.com, a carefully curated site offering fashion tips and a peek into Iman’s worldwide travels.
Today, Iman is expanding her empire with the launch of IMAN Home Bed & Bath Collection featuring prints inspired by Hollywood, Morocco, and Ibiza.
“You can really see the journey from my background in fashion as I approached this collection as if it were a wardrobe for rooms,” Iman says. “I believe that layering doesn’t only apply to fashion and jewelry.”
Iman has received numerous accolades, including the CFDA Fashion Icon Award in 2010, and she was selected by the Business of Fashion as one of the 500 Most Influential People and honored by the Black Retail Action Group in 2013.
