Much Ado About Slow Country: The Premiere
On May 1st, Genesis Deluxe cinemas Lekki, played host to movie lovers as the most anticipated action thriller of the year premiered to amazing reviews.
The event which kicked off at about 5pm started with fabulous red carpet appearances from a number of Nollywood’s finest who came out to support the movie. Among those in attendance were Emem Isong, Wole Ojo, Olumide Oworu, Belinda Effah, Ihuoma Linda Ejiofor, Bassey Ekpeyoung, Idia Aisen amongt others.
While we waited for the screening to begin, the foremost question on my mind was how the movie could have won a viewer’s choice award when most people haven’t seen it yet. A viewer’s choice award meant viewers voted, right? But all my doubts were completely dispelled when the lights dimmed and the first scene came on the big screen.
The film held the whole audience in the room spellbound for two hours, with a flawless storyline and stellar performances from Lead actor Sambasa Nzeribe and Lead actress Ivie Okujaye.
It didn’t take long for me to understand why Slow country was described as the most believable action film. In Nollywood where the action thriller genre was dying a slow death due to poor directing, terrible acting and quack storylines, Slow country not only did due justice, it restored my faith in Nollywood’s future.
Gunshots, drugs, scheming, love, prostitution tinged with humour, I was literarily on the edge of my seat for the duration of the movie with my heart in my mouth as I found myself rooting for poor Kome (Ivie Okujaye) and clueless Osas (Tope Tedela) while wishing a disaster upon the ruthless Tuvi (Sambasa Nzeribe).
Eric Aghimen the amazing producer and director isn’t new to breaking records as his award-winning debut film “A Mile From Home” also received positive response. Slow country is slowly towing the line of success as it already has two prestigious awards and nominations even though it was yet to hit the cinemas in Nigeria.
Leading man Sambasa completely delivered as did the other cast members. A personal favourite was the little boy who played the character of Kome and Osas’s son.
The credits rolled out at 10PM, bringing the event to a close with a speech from the director Eric who profusely thanked the guests adding that he was humbled and grateful for the impressive turnout.
Slow country opens in all cinemas nationwide from this Friday May 19th 2017. Be sure to catch it at any one near you, I guarantee you won’t be sorry.
