Why You Should Ditch New Year Resolutions

new year resolutions

It’s 2023! A New Year always births a new beginning, this is definitely the season where everyone is hashtag #NewYearNewMe, which is quite evident as you see everyone being busy setting New Year resolutions and things they would do differently in 2023.

When it comes to making New Year’s resolutions, the problem is not about the act of making resolutions itself, but rather the act of keeping them. This is where most people get it wrong, they are not able to keep up with the adrenaline rush that comes with the New Year.

As the year passes by, the energy declines due to other commitments such as family, work, friends or even kids and most importantly lack of intentionality at the very beginning when setting those resolutions. Just like goals, resolutions are meant to be achieved with intentionality, whether it is to stop eating banana muffins each and every day or read your bible every night before going to bed, or whatever, it is meant to be done with intentionality and commitment.

The sad part however, is most women lack that commitment or intentionality to keep ourselves in check or make the effort to actually work through our resolutions. So why does this article say we need to ditch New Year’s resolutions?

Because it’s not working at all!

Let’s not deceive ourselves, how many resolutions have you actually achieved in the last 5 years? Why waste time setting them when you know deep down you are not going to follow through?

As much as this is a hard pill to swallow, it’s the painful truth and if we really want to make things happen this year 2023, we need to start thinking intentionally. Though we may be ditching the need to set resolutions this year, we are going to try something different and that is STRATEGY.

Yep, we need strategy this year, what this means is instead of setting resolutions you might not end up achieving, you focus more on strategy, meaning knowing what you really want and getting there, creating habits and intentionally executing them.

  • List the areas you want to improve in your life.
  • Recognize the habits that you truly believe are stopping you in getting what you want.
  • Create routines that discipline to get what you want
  • Always celebrate small wins.

Strategy is so much deeper than resolutions, it keeps you in check, you are able to fall and swiftly pick yourself up without judgement and enjoy the process while at it.

There is so much hope when a new year begins, it brings a refreshing excitement of things to come and milestones you can achieve, but this can only be a reality when the right strategy comes into place. Let’s say you need to lose 50 pounds for your upcoming high school reunion party in September, well the strategy should be cutting down a significant amount of carbs and sugar, registering for cardio and gym membership as well as implementing and maintaining a healthy diet.

As long as the thing you really desire or want is achievable or measurable you can actually attain it using the right strategy and not put yourself under the intense pressure of setting New Year’s resolutions just because everyone is doing it.

You do you, just remember if you are determined, you can achieve anything and everything you ever want this Year.
