Kasper On Campus – Tales From Your Friendly Ghost: Mosunmola Farouq

original

‘The first time we kissed, I had butterflies in my belly. He was beautiful. Then he left me. How he left me. I was mad. At myself for letting it get that far, at him for all those lies. I needed to numb the pain; if only for a second.’

One heart wrenching relationship, one unfortunate encounter, one sniff of that white powder and everything changed.

She was one of those stellar students; beautiful, intelligent, athletic. From a comfortable family so she was the full package. With her wit and her charm, the boys lay in wait. Unilag was definitely the school for her. .

Sucked in a whirlwind of love, hate, sex and drugs, Motun loved, lost and fought battles for her life. Whether she made it out in one piece?

Two years ago was when her social life really took off. Every day she crossed the street there was a new guy, a new car, waiting for her. It was as if the earth had changed course and started to revolve around her.

As a business administration undergrad Mosun was pulling her weight. So far she had managed to maintain a 4.2 c.g.p.a, be a member of ‘Gospel of Christ Fellowship’ and keep up with internships over the summer as well as her sports program. But this second year was beginning to get to her head a little. She had more followers on instagram and twitter than half the celebrities in Lagos alone. Everybody was asking about her; her flawless skin, beautiful face and the perfect mix of slim thick made her what students referred to as ‘the hottest fresher in the University’.

By the middle of the semester, the Gospel of Christ fellowship got her attention every other week at best. Between her studies and her social circle, something had to give. So far she was soaring and just when she thought it couldn’t get any better, Dele came along.

It was one of those nights when she had that strong craving for some ‘suya’. She took a stroll to the regular suya spot with one of her friends from the hostel and this sleek, beautiful black Mercedes C class screeched to a halt right beside her. Not one easily swayed by fancy guys in flashy cars, Mosun was not interested. Not at first anyway. But his voice was smooth as velvet and he was so eloquent, the words rolled right off his tongue. Before long, phone numbers were exchanged and so it began.

Their first date was at Churasco. He was the most attentive man she’d ever met. Hardly ever spoke about himself really but at the time his eyes and his lips and his beautiful dark skin had her distracted. Later, she would realise that he didn’t mention anything about himself and his family because if he had, it’d have been over before it even begun.

The date was everything and more for Mosun. He kissed her soft and gentle and she could think of nothing else. He was sophisticated, likeable, the complete package and she was signed, sealed, delivered; gone. The months that passed were filled with less time for school, less time for church, more time for Dele. He was so sweet though. Always making sure she did assignments and read for tests, one of the many things she loved about him was how he was always encouraging her to do better at her studies.

Dele said he was 27 to Mosun’s 20 but she’d find out that wasn’t so; along with a lot of other things.

The first brick fell right before her birthday. She pulled all the stops. Hair, nails, full body wax. She wanted to be perfect for her dinner with her friends and the ‘surprise’ Dele had for her later. It turned out great. Throughout the day a string of small random sweet gifts had arrived at her hostel, starting from the smallest and working their way to the big ones. By noon, Dele had sent her everything from tiny diamond studs, to an Iphone 6 and none of them were the surprise.

Her friends (even me) ‘ooh-ed and aah-ed’ at every item and gushed about how they wished they could find someone as sweet and thoughtful as Dele. The dinner was done and Dele took her to some fancy low-key spot. No guests in sight, rooms for rent, everything was set beautifully.

That night, Mosun was plied with smooth red wine, the buzz foreign to her. Dele put a pinch of something that looked like salt in her food’ said it would take the edge off. She panicked at first, thought maybe it might be cocaine but he soothed her fears. He wasn’t irresponsible, of course it wasn’t cocaine. After dinner, Dele kissed her. Rough, hard, foreign. She tried to ride with it, tried to bring back the memories of the first time. This kiss was so different. So crass. There was no stopping Dele though. He whispered strange nothings for they weren’t sweet and by dawn, Mosun was limp, tired and no longer a virgin.

When the second brick fell?

See you next Monday.
