Hello Guys,

God Has A Sense of Humour is written by Nigerian author Ebi Akpeti and is a compilation of short stories. It’s a short book with only 113 pages and 8 stories and I literally finished it in 2 days. Each story explores different aspects of relationships, marriage, heartbreak all told from the perspectives of Nigerian women. But there’s a common thread in all these stories and it’s that no matter what happens to you in love, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. You can get over it. And when you eventually do, you realize that everything that happened to you along the way was for a reason. And in fact even for your benefit.

My favorite story was A Prison with Golden Gates. It’s about a woman who lets go of herself during the course of her 10-year marriage. Eventually her husband starts cheating on her and has a series of extramarital relationships. I really found it a little insulting because the story kind of made it out to be like it was the woman’s fault that her husband was cheating on her. I won’t tell you what happens in the end but I really enjoyed that story. I literally laughed out loud at The Gong That Should Have Deafened Me – this story was about a woman who was in love with her best friend. Unfortunately he just saw her as a friend and ended up marrying someone else. Death Is No Longer a Rumor is about a woman who contracted HIV from her seemingly-perfect husband. And then of course I have to talk about Singlelaria, the story that tells of the pressure a 38 year-old unmarried woman feels living in Nigeria where you’re pretty much get questions on marriage once the ink dries on your university diploma.

I learned a lot of lessons about relationships in this book. It was so relatable and a great read. I’d recommend it a thousand times over. If you’re not able to get your hands on the physical book its on Kindle! Reading this book has definitely changed my perspective on dealing with troubles in relationships.
